Fish is one of the most consumed food articles in this world. Their high nutrient flesh is devoid of any bad products, which might be harmful to health. Therefore, fish is considered as one of the healthiest yet tastiest food all over the world. In order to consume fish, one should catch them from their habitat, which can be either fresh water or salt water. The activity or process of catching fish is termed as fishing. The occurrence of fishing usually happens in the natural habitat of the fishes that is in the wild.
The term fishing does not apply for catching farmed fishes or aquatic mammals like whales. It usually refers to those aquatic creatures that are relatively smaller and are not harvested like fishes, molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms and cephalopods. The practice of fishing dates back to the pre-historic era even before any civilization had established themselves on this planet. The earliest record of fishing is almost 40,000 years old and has been found during the Paleolithic age.

More than 500 million individuals of the developing nations are employed in fishing sector. In 2005, a report suggested that almost 14.4 kg of fish that had been captured from the wild fisheries were consumed by per capita worldwide. The number for the fishes that were harvested from the fish farms tended to be 7.4 kg.
